How to Effectively Protect Against Malware, Spyware and Viruses

Computer viruses and malware, the bane of all computer and internet use for Windows based PC’s.

There are many and varied programs both commercial and free to protect yourself against these threats.

But is that all you can do?

No, there is much more one can do to help protect yourself and have a safer internet experience.

Here are some good ways on how to protect your self from viruses and malware.

Set your internet browser, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera and so forth to delete recent history, cookies and temporary files.

This will help with ensuring malicious cookies and adware that like to sit in your internet cache are not there when you next open up your browser.

Report web forgeries, many web sites are known for being attack sites that will attempt to download a virus or some type of malware to your computer.

There is also an option available in all browsers to report these sites.

Update your firewall, obtain a free one or purchase one.

Don’t rely just on Windows firewall alone, whilst good, it is not truly effective and many advanced users also appreciate the benefit these firewalls have to protect not just their internet connection but also their home networks.

Treat all emails with attachments (unless you have explicitly asked for that email from someone) as suspect.

You never know sometimes the difference with friends and family sending emails with funny jokes, pictures, or videos and someone having their account hacked or hijacked by a trojan and sending mails containing these nasties.

Use one for personal use and create a second email account if you like to provide information for signing up with certain websites (some websites do not like email accounts that are Hotmail, Google mail or Yahoo mail based).

If this second email starts to receive lots of spam or virus activity, you can simply delete the account and start a new one.

Have an effective backup routine, and backup your precious data often, there is no worse situation that having to completely delete a computer hard drive and re-install a fresh copy of Windows, and this also deletes all programs, music, photos, videos, emails , documents, everything.

This backup can be as simple as saving your personal data to a USB key or an external hard drive.

If then, these devices are disconnected often, if a virus or other internet nasty hits your computer, it will not affect those devices not connected.
